About Reverend Mary Anne Osborn

I love stories and finding God in unexpected places and being with our youngest parishioners in worship. I experience profound joy in our liturgy, especially in the breaking of bread and the sharing of the bread and wine, and that I long for all people to know the deep peace that only God in Christ can bring. That’s what I think is most important about me.

I’m a Southern transplant, having spent all my life until seminary in the South. I am a “cradle Episcopalian”, though I did try out other churches in college to see if this is really where I belong. It is.

I got my Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and received my Master’s in Psychology from the University of North Florida. I completed the coursework for my Ph.D. in Psychological Counseling at the University of Florida, and for 10 years I worked as a psychologist in hospital settings with children who had life threatening illnesses and their families. This was heart-wrenching work, as you can imagine, but there were incredible moments of emotional depth and insight and warmth as only a child can offer, and I was richly rewarded.

I left that work to attend seminary at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I received my Master of Divinity (M.Div.) in 1986, and was ordained to the Diaconate a few weeks after graduation and to the priesthood six months later. After having worked with children before ordination, life after ordination for the first eight years or so took me to the other end of the age spectrum. I worked with people who were older in hospital and nursing home settings, in a community based inter-faith ministry, and in a church-based center for Aging & Spirituality.

The remainder of my ordained ministry has been in parish settings, most recently at Zion in North Branford.

I live on a lake in rural North Guilford with my life partner of 29 years, The Rev. Joanne Neel-Richard (retired), where we never tire of looking out the window at the variety of wildlife that are our neighbors. My “other” job is as grandmother two days a week to two of our grandchildren for whom we babysit. Pure joy.

Now it is my hope that I can hear about you, not only where you come from, but also what you hope for, what you live for, and who or what makes your heart sing.

See you in church,

Mary Anne Osborn
